They were never described as just "the MelTones." They were always "the fabulous,
exciting MelTones!" And indeed they were.
Adam Roth, John Harrison, and Jon Negus were the actual MelTones, whose vocal stylings and on-stage antics created a
delightful blend of vaudeville-style comedy and jazz harmonies. Backing up the trio was a band in which I played
drums, while Adam's brother Charlie Roth, an accomplished bassist, served as a bridge between the frontline theatrics
and the backline musicians.
But the focus was clearly on the three MelTones. In addition to singing, they each played an instrument (Jon on
alto sax, John on tenor sax, and Adam on guitar). They were all students at Princeton High School, where some
memorable performances took place, but it was the underground theater scene at Princeton University that really adopted the
MelTones. The trio hosted a cabaret-style show in the basement of Murray Dodge Theater immediately after each Theatre
Intime production. The creativity, spontaneity, and energy of those evenings was simply astounding.
